Activity 4: Searching the Internet

Advantages of search engines
-Indexes of search engines are usually vast, representing significant portions of the Internet, offering a wide variety and quantity of information resources indexes of search engines are usually vast, representing significant portions of the Internet, offering a wide variety and quantity of information resources. Enables us to precisely describe the information that we seek.

Disadvantages of search engines
-Search phrases produce list after list of irrelevant web pages. Using search engines does involve a learning curve. Many beginning Internet users, because of these disadvantages, become discouraged and frustrated.

Compare and Contrast Individual and Search Meta engines
-Individual search engines compile their own searchable databases on the web, while Meta searchers do not compile databases. Instead, they search the databases of multiple sets of individual engines simultaneously.

When is it appropriate to use search engine? When is it appropriate to use a search/subject directory?
-It is appropriate to use search engine when you are to search for something in the internet. You don’t have to waste time since it is a direct search where you can have multiple lists of what you want to search about. You have different options as well as different choices of what search engine you would like to use. For subject directory, they are used when you want to know more on broad-based subjects.

What is an invincible web or deep web?
- refers to World Wide Web content that is not part of the Surface Web, which is indexed by standard search engines.

How to find invincible web?
-You can find searchable databases containing invincible WebPages in the course of routine searching in most general web directories.

Why are these web pages not available in search engines or subject directories?
-Because most search engines were originally designed to focus on text. So pages that just have photos, graphics files, sound or video and no text are often missed altogether by the search engines.

Activity 3: Web Browser

  1. What is a web browser? How does it work?
-a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web.

  1. What is a bookmark?
-locally stored Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). Bookmarks are called favorites or Internet shortcuts in Internet Explorer, and by virtue of that browser's large market share, these terms have been synonymous with bookmark since the first browser war.

  1. What is the purpose of a web [browser] cache?
-A web cache stores copies of documents passing through it; subsequent requests may be satisfied from the cache if certain conditions are met. It also reduce bandwidth usage, server load, and perceived lag.

  1. What is a web [browser] plugin?
-a set of software components that adds specific abilities to a larger software application. If supported, plug-ins enable customizing the functionality of an application.

  1. Choose three types of web browsers and answer the following questions for each browser.

How do you customize search providers?
Mozilla Firefox – ctrl + T
Internet Explorer – click new tab or ctrl + T
Google Chrome - click and drag the tab down past the address bar

How do you set homepages?
Mozilla Firefox – Options>Tools>General
Internet Explorer – Tools>Internet Options>General
Google Chrome – Wrench icon on browser toolbar>Options>Settings>Basics

How do you customize search providers?
Mozilla Firefox - Right-click in that site's own search bar and choose Add to search bar
Internet Explorer – Manage Search Provider>Find more provider>OK
Google Chrome – Tools>Options>Basics>Select Google from default>Close

How do you bookmark a page?
Mozilla Firefox – Bookmarks>Bookmark this page
Internet Explorer - Favorites>Add to favorite
Google Chrome – ctrl + D

How do you clear the cache?
Mozilla Firefox – Tools>Options>Advanced>Network>Clear now
Internet Explorer – Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet>Internet Options>Safety>Delete Browsing History

How do you install a plugin?
Mozilla Firefox – Go to Firefox Add-ons site>Add to firefox>Install now
Internet Explorer – Tools>Manage Add-ons
Google Chrome – Extension Detail Page>Install>Click Install

How do you save pages offline?
Mozilla Firefox – (Use a firefox extension) Scrapbook
Internet Explorer- Page>Save as>Indicate where to save it

Activity: 2 The Internet

"Impact of the Internet in our world today"

-The Internet has caused somewhat of a revolution in society, allowing people from all over the world to communicate and express their ideas and feelings. The Internet has also changed the way society treats people and the balance of power.Internet has caused somewhat of a revolution in society, allowing people from all over the world to communicate and express their ideas and feelings. The Internet has also changed the way society treats people and the balance of power. The Internet has caused somewhat of a revolution in society, allowing people from all over the world to communicate and express their ideas and feelings. The Internet has also changed the way society treats people and the balance of power. Internet has forever changed the world in both positive and negative ways. The Internet enables one to find information any time of day, as well as provides convenience with regard to such activities as paying bills. On the other hand, the accessibility of pornography and false information and the occurrence of pop-ups on the Internet serve as negative effects. The Internet today is in many ways seen as an essential to life. It is used in the workplace, school and home. With the invention of the Internet the world was forever changed in both good a bad ways. Many positive results have come from the invention of the Internet. One positive that has resulted from the Internet is the fact that you are always able to access research information anytime of the day or night.

IANA (1969)
-The 'Internet Assigned Numbers Authority' is the entity that oversees global IP address allocation, autonomous system number allocation, root zone management in the Domain Name System (DNS), media types, and other Internet Protocol-related symbols and numbers.

IAB (1979)
-The 'Internet Architecture Board' is the committee charged with oversight of the technical and engineering development of the Internet by the Internet Society.

IESG (1986)
-The 'Internet Engineering Steering Group' is responsible for technical management of IETF activities and the Internet standards process. It administers the process according to the rules and procedures that have been ratified by the ISOC trustees

IRTF (1986)
-The 'Internet Research Task Force' is to conduct research into the long term future of the Internet. The IRTF is guided by the Internet Research Steering Group, and is composed of a number of small research groups that work on the development of the Internet protocols, applications, architecture, and technology.

IETF (1986)
-The 'Internet Engineering Task Force' develops and promotes Internet standards, cooperating closely with the W3C and ISO/IEC standards bodies and dealing in particular with standards of the TCP/IP and Internet protocol suite.

ISOC (1992)
-The 'Internet Society' is an international, nonprofit organization founded during 1992 to provide direction in Internet related standards, education, and policy. It states that its mission is "to assure the open development, evolution and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world".

InterNIC (1993)
-The 'Internet Network Information Center' known as InterNIC, was the Internet governing body primarily responsible for domain name and IP address allocations.

ICANN (1998)
-The 'Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' is responsible for managing the Internet Protocol address spaces (IPv4 and IPv6) and assignment of address blocks to regional Internet registries, for maintaining registries of Internet protocol identifiers, and for the management of the top-level domain name space (DNS root zone), which includes the operation of root nameservers.

What made the internet reliable and efficient?
-It stays connected. A good connection will stay on for as long as you want it to. The connection has a good speed, at least a speed close to what the service company advertises.

What principles applied in the Internet that could also be beneficial in other areas?
-It is important for communicating purposes, transmitting datas and more. Gaining access to the things that you need the most accurately, tho its not that much concrete when you serach for something, it gives you lots of options and results instantly as long you have a good connection

Explain TCP/IP Protocol Suite (Internet Model)
-It is a basic communication language or protocol of the Internet. It can also be used as a communications protocol in a private network. Describes a set of general design guidelines and implementations of specific networking protocols to enable computers to communicate over a network, also provides end-to-end connectivity specifying how data should be formatted, addressed, transmitted, routed and received at the destination. Protocols exist for a variety of different types of communication services between computers. Also it provides acknowledge connection-oriented communications and provides guaranteed delivery proper sequencing and data integrity checks. Used to connect hosts on the Internet. TCP/IP uses several protocols, the two main ones being TCP and IP.
